How coffee came to India in 1600 AD
Whilst travelling on a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1559, an Indian Sufi, Saint Baba Budan, acquired a taste for the coffee he drank there. On his way back home, he managed to smuggle seven green coffee beans through the port of Mocca. At that time, the Yemeni held tight control over the coffee market, and only exported roasted coffee in order to avoid people being able to cultivate it outside Yemen.
Baba Budan’s seeds grew and flourished in his Chikimagalur courtyard, and subsequently, the plants spread amongst the outlying mountain countryside.
Meanwhile, under English rule, Indian coffee cultivation grew generally; at the same time, the Dutch established large and successful coffee plantations in the region.

About Jo and Namith’s Plantation and

Namith’s grandfather, Mr. Nagegowda, established the plantation in 1975, in Karnataka, India, and the family business has gradually grown since then. Now, the third generation is carefully following in the family tradition, and are tending to four varieties of arabica coffee bush. The plantation is located over 1000 metres above sea level, and due to the berries growing and ripening slowly, they are able to develop their complex flavours fully.
My brother Jo works abroad as an engineer, where his company hires local people for their projects, and Namith, who worked on one particular project was well-known for only drinking the coffee he had brought from home — Jo sampled this coffee and really appreciated its distinct flavour and good quality. As their friendship grew, they discussed the possibility that there were enough of their precious coffee beans to sell abroad to Europe … Jo wanted to collaborate with me in this exiting venture, and so, we are now in business!
The beans are being brought into Belgium directly from the plantation, and we are aiming to comply with Fairtrade business standards, and firmly establish sustainable methods for our Indian, shade grown coffee. By importing Namith’s coffee, we can introduce an Indian flavour to the European market. By Importing Namith’s coffee, we are introducing a high quality, authentically grown and sourced, Indian coffee to the European market.

The plantation grows four different arabica plant varieties. The Arabica’s are a mix of the four related typicas. Cauvery Coffee
Also known as Catimor, the Cauvery coffee plant is a hybrid descendent of Caturra (a natural mutant of the high quality Bourbon variety) and Hybrido-de- Timor. The Cauvery coffee plant inherited the superior quality attributes of Caturra and the tough resistance of Hybrido-de-Timor.
Kents Coffee
Kents – the earliest variety of Arabica coffee – was selected by an English planter of the same name, during the 1920s. It remained popular with planters until the 1940s, due to the lower susceptibility of this particular coffee plant to rust disease. Although it is currently grown in a only few areas, Kents coffee is known for its exceptional cup quality.
S.795 Coffee
The most popular variety of Arabica coffee in India, S.795 was launched in the 1940s. The S.795 coffee plant is known for its superior quality, high yields, bold beans and better relative tolerance to leaf rust. The S.795 coffee plant was developed using the Kents Arabica coffee plant, known for its high quality.

A widely cultivated Arabica variety, it has a balanced cup with subtle flavour notes of Mocha coffee.
Sln.9 Coffee (Selection 9 Coffee)
The Selection 9 coffee plant is a hybrid between Tafarikela (an Ethiopian Arabica collection) and the tough and resistant Hybrido-de-Timor. It boasts of all the superior cup quality traits of Tafarikela, and won the Fine Cup Award for best Arabica at the Flavour of India – Cupping Competition 2002 organised by Coffee Board of India.
Arabica Plantation
The beans are uniform bluish-green in colour, with a clean polished appearance. In the cup, the coffee exhibits full aroma, medium to good body, good acidity and fine flavour, with a hint of spice. This is a rare, premium coffee and truly represents the best quality coffee from India.

A very tangy, very spicy coffee. This coffee is for those who love espresso in all its variations. This coffee has a short supply and is quickly sold.

Robusta Parchment
The beans are bold, round with pointed ends, and grey to bluish-grey in colour. The cup ensures full body, soft, smooth and mellow flavour. Suitable for all blends that should have a discreet Robusta character.

Robusta Cherry
The Indian Cherry Robusta coffee beans offer a strong and smooth coffee experience with a much higher caffeine . It has a chocolatey flavour, low acidity and a strong body. Indian Robusta varieties are among the best of their kind .

The arabica’s have about half the amount of caffeine compared to Robusta. The robusta is ideal to create an expresso blend.
The flavour of different seizes of the beans: AAA ,AA, A , B and C is the same. AAA beans are the biggest and the C Grade beans are the smallest. the taste of these beans are usually same.

A Peaberry (PB) is a single coffee bean within a single coffee cherry (fruit), instead of the usual two half-beans per berry.
About 7% of the coffee crop is Peaberry. Peaberry coffee beans are sold separately from other beans. Peaberry beans are generally valued more highly than regular coffee beans, because they have a more concentrated flavour.
